  • research that focuses on understanding experiences, behaviors, and motivations rather than measuring things numerically.

Best Stage: Early Concept → Ongoing Development

Primary Goal: Evaluating design decisions, alignment with goals, and identifying risks before implementation

Overview

A design review is a collaborative evaluation of a game’s design, such as mechanics, systems, levels, UI, or narrative, where developers, designers, researchers, and stakeholders come together to assess whether the design aligns with player needs, game goals, and technical feasibility.

In game research, design reviews serve as a touchpoint to ensure that player insights and usability data are actually shaping design decisions.

What Happens in a Game Design Review?

  • Present the design (a prototype, feature doc, or UX flow)

  • Walk through user flows or scenarios

  • Discuss player data or past test results (e.g., survey feedback, retention drop-offs)

  • Evaluate design intent vs. player experience

  • Identify usability issues or design risks

  • Agree on next steps (e.g., iteration, test plan, refinement)
